What New Powers Should we Demand by St Andrews Night?

We need to get together and decide what new powers we should demand for Scotland.

There is an increase in income tax raising power of about 2% scheduled for 2015 I think anyway but currently the Barnett formula, I believe, delivers a favourable amount to Scotland.

  • We take more from the UK, partly because of dealing with our increased land area eg with regards to railways etc,  but
  • We also give more to the UK eg oil revenues and net exporter of electricity partly because of our renewables.
So, where does this leave us ? Currently its tax raising powers which are being talked about, eg increasing power over Corporation Tax. If this was reduced then you can encourage businesses to invest in our country by building factories etc. here.

However, what I would like to see is more power also with regards to our own natural resources. We should get the revenue from our natural resources such as the oil and from our seas with regards to fishing and from our wind, waves and sun when it comes to electricity.

Lord Kelvin has been tasked with leading a commission into this and it is to be called the Smith Commission - here is news of the members of the commission so far as at 6th October 2014 - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-29479442

I will gather in this particular post any useful references and see if it is possible to come to some decision about what powers we should ask for - I will set a deadline of St Andrews Night which is when the political parties have to come up with this as well.

Also, I would like to see the SNP involved in this - there is no point in Labour, Conservative and Lib Dem excluding all that expertise from the discussions.  Come on MSPs - do the Best for Scotland !

That was the Week that Was

The post referendum week - already it sounds like the Vow is being broken, we have signed a deal for a warship, a hotel in Edinburgh's sale has gone ahead - it was waiting for a No vote !

And we have benefit freezes and cuts - funnily enough affecting the lower end of income scale - its not affecting the "tax breaks" the term used for "benefits" to the higher end of the income scale.  And we are possibly becoming embroiled in further Middle East issues. That region is in huge turmoil and I hope families there can return to peace and stability but the question is how on earth can that be achieved.  The worldwide forces that sell arms for oil etc. are possibly greater than any government is now capable of dealing with, except perhaps the superpowers.

And then we have indiscretion from our highly educated PM, of the sort that is very surprising.

And now to round it off a series of astonishing comments from the Tory party conference ... astonishing if true and now making me think they may well be aimed to be deliberately antagonistic - could they by chance be aiming to divide Scotland ..... could the "indiscretion" perhaps also be trying to sow the seed of discord ?

We really need to be careful and we need to work together for a better future for Scotland and decide what powers we really want. Any comments about what to focus on ?

To Be or Not to Be .....

Over the year I have swayed from Yes to Dont Know positions most of the time. And also less frequently I was a No. Sometimes these positions could change in the space of a thought. Sometimes I was a Yes for three days in a row or for a few hours. The typical questions for me seemed to be answered. I had satisfactory answers on currency, the EU and in fact for a No vote the EU stance seems more risky.
A personal one for me is the Childcare issue and I dont like the direction being proposed with a Yes.

But overall my personal hope has/had been for Yes.

The Better Together campaign has been dreadful. No positivity. But many people feel it is a "safer" vote and we are already in a better situation in many ways than for example England as we have no University tuition fees etc.  However other questions which concern voters who may vote No include Questions about families stranded across borders. There are many ties binding us between all the countries on this small island. And remember our situation is different from some other mainland Europe countries as we have sea borders on all sides. We are in this together whether we like it or not. Although having visited an island in the North of Scotland this weekend it is very obvious how far it is from Westminster or even Edinburgh - they are different worlds. And Westminster and Edinburgh need to remember this !

If its a No vote we do need to get together after this and make plans for the future. And we need to work with friends and colleagues in England to come up with some sort of Citizens Charter. Maybe have an online "referendum" opinion site where we can all agree on issues such as
  • lets not upgrade Trident as its owned by the Americans
  • lets preserve the NHS, lets encourage companies who are exporting,
  • lets make sure the profits from oil are either saved for a nest egg or are distributed amongst us.
  • Lets reform land so we dont have huge landowners which leads to depopulation of the countryside in Scotland - a peculiarly Scottish issue !
SO FINGERS CROSSED ON THURSDAY - GOOD LUCK TO SCOTLAND !!!

And Maybe I'll change my mind again ............. in fact heard more very good reasons this morning to vote one particular way ...... but I do not like people bullying others into their point of view. Whatever your view yes be passionate, yes answer questions if asked but don't make assumptions about others and don't start trying to convert people one way or the other without being asked - there is nothing more annoying !

And I suppose either way one of the worst results would be if it comes down to just a few voters on either side, especially if they don't get over 50% of the population. It should always have been stipulated that at least 50% of population agreed to such a massive change.  Especially when it is now possible to do a postal vote if you cant make it to the polling station on Thursday.

Top Twenty for Undecided Voters in Scottish Referendum!!

If you are like me and you hear a song on the radio, quite often they can sway your feelings quite a bit and would have you strongly voting one way or the other ! Or deciding to turn into a rock chick etc... well its a bit late for me to be that ! But I did see a nice pair of boots in Clarks ... !!

Ah well - here are some songs which immediately ran through my mind yesterday as I tried to think which songs would make you vote one way or the other !

Of course the Yes campaign have claimed Caledonia by Dougie McLean. And we all love a rousing chorus of Flower of Scotland !

But what ones suit an undecided voter in their ponderings or would make you go for a conventional No vote - not quite the thing for a Rock Chick to think of when wanting to change the world !!

Here goes (a lot of these were popular at our University Union disco in the 80s !) :
And sorry some of the well known bands have obviously got great copyright lawyers so you cant get to hear them ! But not great way to introduce young people to those bands is it if you cant hear them at all !

Campaign Strategies

It seems to be that the YES Campaign has been very well run.

At least a year ago they started with meetings to get people involved and I imagine to sign up early campaigners.  They then issued this massive tome - the White Paper. I doubt many people ploughed their way through that !
But the thing that they have done is that each person involved in the campaigning has probably felt valued. And part of a team ! And each one puts their little Yes logo on their Twitter profile and feels good as they have seen the light !  The same happens with stickers in the windows of houses etc.
And even better they have had tea and cakes sessions - coffee mornings etc.
Again what better than to be invited for tea and cakes ! Anyone was invited, and in particular these seemed to be aimed at women. They were invited to debate issues and see if they could find answers from invited speakers.

And then finally a classic move, there was a Wee Blue book issued which obviously summarised the main issues. I am not sure if this was part of the official campaign, but it was issued by a campaigning organisation Wings over Scotland. But in a clever move, whether deliberate or not, it was under-supplied, hence upping the demand for it and people have been asked to pass it on to others once they have read it - a classic move to increase value !

Contrast this with the No Campaign....

The only time we have heard from them really is to tell us that we can't keep the Pound. This argument goes on and on ..... and if you look into it I suspect they are wrong as the pound is backed by oil money .......
I did feel Alistair Darling did a good job in arguing a rather thankless case - arguing for a country that is not even run by his party ! And which really has a pretty dire vision for the future, if any !
Some No voters have had their mind made up from the start, for a variety of religious or cultural reasons.  Perhaps some think they have the right answer and are as bad as the convinced Yes people in that they are not willing to even contemplate the other view. At least the Yes ones have the excuse that they are living in that future at the moment !

No voters seem to be more likely to keep quiet about their intentions and dont go in for displaying window stickers etc. I don't know why this is. The only ones I have seen making an obvious display seem to also support a certain Glasgow football team or else are very large landowners and display their No signs or their "Proud to be Scottish but Voting No" signs in large fields often with busy roads nearby so getting lots of viewers !  Of course some people are committed No voters as they may have a lot at stake e.g. if they work in England or have cross border families.
What I don't understand is why the No campaign has not focussed on what we have in common. A shared past  (for the last 300 years), taking in WW1 and WW2. There are numerous cross border links, in families and work lives. These intermingled threads could be difficult to disentangle. And if the countries head in different directions politically that could be even harder.

And, I did offer the Better Together "No" campaign what I thought was a great idea for a TV programme. I contacted them way back when there was still time to make such a programme. Actually this programme idea would have worked possibly for Yes as well but at least it would have increased cross border communication and understanding.  The programme could have been in a sort of reality TV style format, introducing e.g. a farmer from NE of Scotland to a farmer in Somerset, a fisherman from Lochinver to a fisherman from Cornwall, a teacher from Glasgow with a teacher from London, etc. Other interesting ones would be bankers, doctors, etc. Anyone from areas where EU subsidies etc have had quite different effects in the different parts of the country. What problems do the people share and what advantages do some have.

So it remains to be seen which campaign has done best at presenting their side !  Both are kept within tight constraints with regards to rules and amount of money that can be spent on campaigning. But it has been interesting and possibly in fact informative to watch the campaigns !!

The Evolution of Voters in the Independence Debate - Extremists not Welcome !

Extremists on either side are not welcome in the Independence Referendum debate. Whichever way the vote goes, they will not help Scotland's future or reputation and with the eyes of the World now on us, this is the time to conduct a civilised debate and to show the world how democracy can work.  And I hope some of the enthusiasm for politics carries on afterwards with people getting more involved and demanding answers from our politicians and business and industry leaders and councils and health services etc.

However to get back to the extremists, in some ways they make me hanker after the typical 30 to 40% turnout type elections where really only those who were interested would make it along to the polling stations!  In places like Australia, voting is compulsory and you must place your mark on the polling card, even if it's to say you are undecided.  However for this major decision for our country, it looks like we are going to have a very high turnout this time and everyone has an opinion. In fact I have detected various voting "species" evolving !
The evolution of Homo pressé pressé - poster at Carnac Museum, France !
Various species of voter are appearing from out of the undergrowth ! I hope you find my descriptions to be light-hearted as opposed to insulting.

We have the "Negatum extremus" - this species will be voting No and has maybe only a few extreme reasons why, often inherited !  This species evolved a long time ago from "Positum extremus" which is usually found on much higher ground and enjoys a colder climate ! The two no longer communicate and are fairly rare.

Then there is the "Negatum  robustus" and "Positum robustus" - these are determined to vote in one way or the other, have possibly been in this state for some time and have perhaps decided based on two or three issues. There may also be an element of herd instinct where they adapt to their environment by surviving in a group and gaining strength and affirmation from that group.

Then there is the large group "Negatum placidus" and "Positum placidus" - these groups have decided, they have debated, discussed and have considered the opposite points of view. But based on some of the arguments they have made their minds up.  They are willing to join discussions and are generally fairly easy going but have decided. They are fairly unlikely to change their groupings and move to another herd at this stage. And in fact 1,000,000 of the "Positum placidus" have signed a pledge !

And then there is the very timid species "Suffragium refusum" - this species has no intention of voting and is not interested and will hide in their house on 18th September .... actually this breed is pretty rare this time and is being actively hunted by the Yes campaign. I say good on the Yes campaign for their efforts to get this elusive species involved !!
(by the way perhaps I am just displaying my ignorance - I did not realise until writing this that the word Suffrage basically meant "to vote" in Latin, hence the suffragettes...who were fighting for not only the right to vote but the right to stand for election and to be represented democratically.)

However the most desirable beast that is hunted is the "Mediatus quiero", that irritating species which just keeps on asking questions !  To which they want answers !! (see previous blog post !)  This species is unwilling to settle in one place and is a more solitary being, often shunned by its peers !

I hope you enjoyed that ! And perhaps found it thought provoking as even if your mind is made up, I thought one of the most useful exercises I have heard was in a radio debate where they ask a Yes and a No politician to come up with an argument for the opposite side.  Because really, we should all at least be able to understand the opposite point of view. We need to understand what it is we have rejected.  And more importantly, after the vote we need to be able to get along together so it is a good idea to have at least considered these opposite points of view. And to keep involved after the vote, whether it is a Yes or No, so that we can all make a difference to our country and demand answers from our politicians.

Why I'm an Undecided Voter in the Independence Referendum

Well people are starting to ask my which way I'm voting and in fact a friend got quite stroppy about it the other day ! So from now on I have decided that if I do make my mind up one way or the other then I'm not going to say which way !
And "Better Together" have just put out an advert about an undecided woman voter - I didnt see it on television so had no idea what people were talking about but the "Yes" campaign then decided to parody it so now I am thoroughly confused what the advert was meaning to say in the first place but something sexist I believe about a woman who wasn't making up her own mind but was going to vote the same as her husband. Not sure what that is all about at all....

Ah well, to put a stop to this idea that Undecideds or Don't Knows are in some way less intelligent or less abreast of the issues or just haven't bothered to think about it, I decided to gather all my pro and con arguments and show why being a Don't Know is a very valid position indeed. Anyone who can help solve these conundrums please do so !

Point 1 - Nuclear Weapons
I dont want to see the upgrade to Trident as its too expensive and we would be "in the pockets" of the Americans and I would also love to see the Trident submarines and missiles moved from the Clyde and I'd love to see nuclear weapons eradicated worldwide ..... BUT ........
I remember going to CND meetings and wearing my CND badge and used to argue for the removal of nuclear weapons...they are dangerous, even just from the point of view of possible accidental use....but the pragmatic opinion that you end up coming round to is that they may also be functioning as a deterrent and have perhaps stopped others using them by merely being there. But we also need to be careful as some state which has nuclear weapons could well be taken over by extremists who wont even care if we have a deterrent....
And finally I am pretty sure i have heard these submarines need a deep water port... so would they really be able to be transferred to England.  And in the grand scale of things whether they are on the Clyde or some other river in the UK we would probably all be eradicated anyway if these weapons were used...
And as for the people who argue they should be kept because of 1,000 jobs (which are probably mostly taken by navy personnel from Portsmouth anyway) then that has got to be the worst argument for keeping a weapon of mass destruction that I have ever heard !
And finally it seems to me that guns are the biggest horror in the world nowadays - guns in the hands of the wrong people.

OK so those are just some of the lengthy pros and cons for Point 1 !!

Point 2 - Cross Border Links - family and jobs - a reason to vote No Perhaps ?
Many people who live in Scotland have family in England - children,.parents, grandparents. The situation at the moment is that if you were born in Scotland you would get both passports but so would your children but the problems may well start to arise when those children's children then need a passport. Where would they live ? Would they no longer have the right to live "across the border" from wherever they are living ?  If we are all members of the EU as at present which has an open border policy then this might not matter very much, but again we don't know what is going to happen about the EU.  So this seems like a possible future problem. And of course we are so used to working in England or Scotland from both sides of the border - people freely move to find work, not always by choice but this could become more difficult and finding jobs in the other country could also become more difficult.

Point 3 - The EU - a reason to vote Yes perhaps - but based on a lot of assumption and guesses
The European Union - now I am not a great expert on Europe at all. I love visiting Europe and would love to speak more languages - I have spent 20 years learning French and love to speak it.  So Europe as a continent is a place I love.  From an economic point of view I know there is the European Trading Community or Common Market - this seems a good idea - as long as everyone sticks to the rules which I believe other countries do not always do !  And now there is the EU. This is where I get a bit lost but I do like the idea of it, but I dont like some of the things I hear such as expenses scandals where money seems to go missing, overpaid diplomats etc. and I dont like when our representatives such as those who failed Scottish fishing- http://www.thefreelibrary.com/YOU+HAVE+NO+BALLS+MINISTER%3B+Cod+Crusaders+blast+Government+fisheries...-a0109051708
Perhaps being a smaller country we would be more in touch with issues such as fishing which are really relevant here and a lot of jobs and trade were based on it and maybe these could be brought back....
But overall I like the EU and would love to work there !
But ...............and this is probably the biggest reason I would have for aYes vote !
We dont know how rUK would vote if David Cameron gave in and gave them a vote as to whether to stay in the EU or not.  I have strong suspicions that even though numerous production jobs are here purely because we are a base for companies to trade in the EU, this would be ignored by those who would turn out to vote and I suspect it would be a vote to leave the EU....
so that would be in my opinion not a good thing.
And meanwhile we are quite pro-Europe in Scotland or perhaps dont think about it much at all. At one point the Highlands were zoned as a region for extra development by EU money and I know there have been quite a number of projects which were supported with EU money - mind you even that didn't manage to get us a dualled A9 road....
BUT ...........
To finish my European tour .... the EU itself is being difficult about whether Scotland would be accepted as a member even though we are quite pro-Europe. This is because some of their countries such as Spain also have regions who are pushing for Independence. I dont know the history of their claims but certainly Scotland definitely did exist as an Independent country previously so we do have a good claim.
Manuel Barroso (who he ?!!!) has said it would be extremely difficult but then the Attorney General says this is wrong ! http://www.scotsman.com/news/politics/top-stories/scottish-independence-barroso-incorrect-on-eu-1-3313437.
BUT.....all members of the UK are EU citizens so I don't see how they could turn us away. And anyway its the whole UK which is currently a member. That is not going to exist if there was a YES vote so both Scotland and rest of UK would have to re-apply.
Oh and while I remember .... would they really be likely to refuse us when our coastline lays claim to a huge percentage of EU fishing rights - here is some interesting reading: http://www.businessforscotland.co.uk/controlling-our-future-scottish-fishing-and-the-need-for-independence/

Point 4 - ALREADY HAVE THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS ?
Just remembered this at the last minute but its another important point. It came to me while people were saying why is Alastair Darling leading Better Together - he is not even in Scottish Parliament.. Why is it not for example the Labour leader of Scottish parliament or even the Conservative leader... anyway the point is that we have it quite good at the moment. We have a Scottish Parliament with quite a few powers and control of quite a few budgets. We dont have income tax changing powers at the moment - many would say perhaps thats a good thing as SNP have lots of ideas for spending it ! But we do have a fairly protected NHS compared with stories of what is going on in England. And Southern Ireland seem to be entirely private healthcare like in the US so we are really quite lucky. We have no tuition fees if we attend Scottish universities but then does that mean our Universities are having to cope on lower budgets which wont be good in the long run. We do also have access to some UK wide research budgets which affect University research too, but again I'd say that these funds might just re-jig a bit afterwards if it was a YES vote. But also with regards to education I do believe there has been a massive reduction in college places this year. So although the Universities may be OK, if you were aiming for college its maybe not so good. And there is also a personal care thing which we have plus no prescription charges - I'm not too sure of the details.  And the SNP have managed to find funds to stop the worst of the Bedroom Tax effects.
BUT....... overall, the Scottish Government has managed to balance the books and maybe this Status Quo is a bit of "THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS" ?  We could maybe fight for the Devo-Max option for the future ? Especially if the Yes vote is high but doesnt actually win ?

Point 5 - Scandinavia - is it really so good or is this just more Scandi Fiction ?
We are told that we should emulate the Scandinavian or Nordic countries (Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and to a lesser extent Iceland). We keep hearing how wonderful they are to live in. They come top of a lot of league tables for happiness, wealth inequality etc.
This would involve higher taxes to pay for all the additional public services such as increased childcare. This is called the Common Weal method I believe ‘
BUT..... all is not quite what it seems !
Firstly they are now finding that there is quite a high incidence of mental illness in their teenagers due to this regime where there is less time with family. Read more here :
http://www.theguardian.com/money/2013/apr/21/childcare-expert-jonas-himmelstrand-tories
http://www.barnensratt.se/index-en.htm
And in Sweden, parents find that due to the high taxes it is now a necessity to have two full time well paid jobs just to be left with one reasonable amount of salary after taxation.  Its not a choice - there is no option - its a necessity = not so good. Would be better to have flexibility to cope with differing family circumstances.
And...I have also heard that to be an entrepreneur and maybe run your own business and make money in Sweden is quite frowned upon. The only people who are "allowed" to make money are either footballers or if you win the lottery then that is OK. Now I don't think that is a good idea. We have become used to the idea of entrepreneurs in this country - its one of the few pluses that resulted from the Thatcher era. So whether its a small one man or one woman business or a business which expands to take on many more people, this is seen as good in this country and I believe we should have a taxation system to support this.
The Scandinavian countries have a tradition as working as a community together and community ownership and co-operatives work well - but would this transfer here ? I have heard it said that we are now too individualistic (as a result of the 80s?) for this to work successfully.
And also some in the SNP are hopeful  we could join an alliance with these countries - but do they want us ?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03s6pjv

Point 6 Tax evasion / avoidance - Tax Havens
This is something which should have been sorted out world-wide. We should not have countries such as Belgium or Ireland or the Channel Islands, Bahamas, Cayman Islands etc acting as low tax economies where companies can base a subsidiary as a means of lowering their tax bills. It hasnt been stopped when we have been "Better Together". BUT.... then again I'm not sure "Uncle Alex" will manage any better !!   But this is a big problem and as we all face austerity measure and cutbacks the question is why are we putting up with this ? And why are we putting up with bosses of companies being paid well over a million pounds so they can go an buy ski chalet businesses and charge us a pile to go there as well ! This system needs overhauling. Its depressing that there actually is wealth there but its just not being distributed at all.

So there you have it.
Those are six immediate reasons which make it hard to decide how to vote, although the first one is slightly tied in with government policy at the time rather than a definite reason for being an Independent Country.

If you are Undecided - why not make a similar list - maybe it will help you to decide ? Maybe it helped me !!  And send me your list if you'd like others to see it and I could publish it - or you could add it as a comment here.  We could well be the ones to make a difference. Who knows it could well come down to one vote - its a big responsibility really !

New Declaration of Arbroath ?

Alex Salmond is in Arbroath today and its one month to go exactly until the Referendum !

I wondered if he was going to use the occasion to make a new "Declaration of Arbroath" !

And then this morning as I went to switch off the television I ended up watching "The Stuarts", a fabulous series that has been on about the Stuart dynasty !

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p01lknsc/sign/the-stuarts-1-and-i-will-make-them-one-nation

So this got me thinking about the periods in time when Scotland has been Independent and when it has been part of a larger grouping such as the United Kingdom.

So here goes - I will piece together from my scant knowledge of history ! Please send me any corrections or additions if you know more !

Early influences on what we now know as Scotland were Picts, Britons, Angles (Germanic invaders), Scots, Vikings and Romans.
The kingdom of Alba (Gaelic word for Scotland) formed around 900 AD and continued to 1286
The kingdom formed when the Kingdoms of the Picts and Scots came together

The Scottish Wars of Independence (1296-1357)
various wars between England and Scotland, triggered in the first place by the unexpected death of the Scottish King Alexander III who fell from his horse in 1286.
This is also the period when Scotland set up the Auld Alliance with France.
In 1320, the Declaration of Arbroath was signed - 1320 - Scotland becomes Independent

At the end of this series of wars, Scotland is an Independent Country...

1603
The Union of the Crowns
James VI of Scotland also becomes James I of England, following the death of the last Tudor monarch Queen Elizabeth I.  James planned a complete Union of Scotland and England, to create a new country called Great Britain but was not wholly successful in creating a political union - full union did not occur until 1707.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01qfhwd

1707
Under Queen Anne, the Kingdom of Scotland and the Kingdom of England unite to form the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707, with the Treaty of Union and subsequent Acts of Union, to form the Kingdom of Great Britain. (read about Queen Anne here - and how horrendous for her to have no surviving children from 17 pregnancies - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anne,_Queen_of_Great_Britain)

1800
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was formed by the Acts of Union 1800, which united the
Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland.
The Union Flag was created at this point and still remains the flag of the United Kingdom. It combined the flags of England (which included Wales) and Scotland with a "St Patrick's Cross" to represent Ireland.
The southern area of Ireland subsequently gained Independence and the northern part remains as part of the United Kingdom.

We should only be discussing the Essentials of Independence....

Today's discussions on the radio have been focussing on the costs and timescales of removing the Trident submarine base from Faslane. This is as a result of a report out today by the Royal United Services Institute which seems to say that the No Campaign had over-estimated the costs of re-locating the base. They say the timescale may have to be longer but that the whole process would not be impossible.  I had previously thought it might be as there are only two deep water access points to Scotland on the West Coast and I wasn't sure that these submarines could come into for example the South of England .... but who am I to say ! I'm sure they know what they are talking about !

Ref : http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/scottish-independence/11032878/Yes-vote-Scotland-would-be-stuck-with-Trident-until-2028.html

However it seems to me that yet again we are talking about specifics which are not entirely "CORE" to whether we are Independent or not. This seems to me to be specific policy. And along with such things as the childcare issue, they are very much personal opinions and are current SNP policy.

But there must be many people who believe in Independence and who also believe we need a nuclear deterrent, and vice versa !

So when are we going to separate out those things which will definitely happen on Independence from those things which would be dependent on the government of the day ?

What new powers are we definitely going to gain by Independence and what things are policy of the government on the day ?  For example, with Independence, Scotland would have full control over fiscal policy, with full powers on taxes, spending & borrowing. This compares with the current situation where the Scottish Parliament is responsible for just 7 per cent of taxes raised in Scotland.

So that is a definite GAIN of power.

Something such as the childcare issue, which I personally do not agree with, could be said to be government policy and in fact could be modified today even before the vote.
I would sum up my own idea for the care of children as that each child should have some funding attached to it and this could be used to either subsidise parents to look after their own children in the first few years, which I believe is the best for the child. however if people wanted to use the subsidy to put it towards nursery or childminder fees so that they themselves can carry on working then they could use it for that. This would put both of these families on an equal footing. Currently the only families being subsidised are those with two working parents. These subsidies can be quite a lot at times and are required particularly as whole nursery salaries need to be found from somewhere, particularly if parents are on low wages. (I wont touch on the finances of single parent families here). However the whole system is creaking and vast subsidies go to some families and single earner familes who care for their own children, whether on low salaries or higher salaries are currently vastly penalised and in some cases are contributing a huge percentage of tax.

Anyway as you can see I get diverted !
But the fact is that I am leaning towards voting for Independence but on certain things like Childcare, Defence etc I am not necessarily in agreement with the government we have at the moment.  If we gain Independence I really think the first election after that is the one where we will find out the direction the electorate would like to see the country moving.  And I would also like to see a new re-named party maybe slightly to the right, to represent our businesses, farmers and industry in Scotland. Perhaps a modernisers party or progressive party.... there was a move in the Conservative party recently for something like this and I think it is needed to balance the debate out. After all Scotland used to have quite a high Conservative vote - where has that gone at the moment ?

Anyway let me know what you think ?

Undecided's Understand All Too Well !

Don't Knows Fight Back !

Listening in to the Call Kaye / Morning Call phone-in this morning on BBC Radio Scotland about the Scottish Referendum and the Obama comments.  Certainly on the phone-in Obama did not sound too certain about the point of view which he was expressing.
Heilan Coo - Undecided - which way to go ?!
However I took slight umbrage (huff ?) with one of those phoning in, who happened to be a "definite No" voter. I got the feeling from him that he was thinking that us Undecided or Don't Know voters just don't understand the debate.  However I would say that us Undecideds understand it all too well !

And in fact we are being asked to weigh up many things that are as yet undecided and will not be decided on the 18th September.
For example just on the aspect of the EU, we don't yet know if there will be a referendum in rest of UK or the UK on EU membership. It seems likely that that vote might sway towards leaving the EU. On another aspect, many of the MEPs that were recently voted in are in anti-EU parties, so we may well see reforms in the EU.
So already on just that one issue look how many aspects there are.....

And....some people are going to be directly affected in one way or another by the decision. We might hope for a strong, modern "new" European looking Scotland.....but ....... for some people there are going to be immediate affects ...   Farmers who have large EU subsidies on their farms, People working for English companies in Scotland or for companies with EU subsidies etc etc   These people could well bear the brunt of the vote for a Yes.  Whereas if you are working for a council then I suspect you would see things carry on as they are, certainly in the short term, so there is much less risk for you.
But again there has been talk of some sort of a transtition period of 2 years so I will try and find out more about that...........anyone got a good link for that ?

So respect the Undecideds and don't just see us as people who need to have their minds changed ! Maybe some of the Yes or No camp should start listening to the Don't Knows !

EU - Did You vote ?

Well we have had some time now to get used to the European election results.
I was away for the weekend in a highland cottage so only managed to pick up the results bit by bit via radio announcements !

The first thing is we have lost an experienced LibDem MEP George Lyon who had served the Scottish farming community well I believe.  And we have gained a UKIP MEP !
I wonder if UKIP expected that. Had their party machine detected their candidate was likely to get in?
The UK are one of only four countries in the EU to vote regionally rather than nationally.
If we had been voting nationally then all the votes for the Greens would have led to more MEPs.
If the vote had been national and seats decided nationally then this would have been the result, which would have better reflected voters intentions :

UK-WIDE
UKIP - 27.49% of vote - actual seats : 24   if voting nationally : 19.2
Labour - 25.4% of vote - got 20 seats but if voting nationally : about 18
Conservative 23.93% - got 19 seats if voting nationally : 17.5
Green - 7.87% - got 3 seats but if voting nationally : 5.5
LibDems - 6.87% - got 1 seat but if voting nationally : 4.8
SNP - 2.46% - got 2 seats but if voting nationally : 1.82
BNP - 1.14% - got 0 seats but if voting nationally would have : 0.8
PC - 0.71% - got 1 seat but if voting nationally : 0.5

I imagine the reason the MEPs are divided into regions is so that they can represent those regions at EU meetings. I wonder if they have been doing this well.... must find out if we can find out more about their voting records etc.

For SCOTLAND alone this seems to be the final results based on numbers voting for each party :

BRITAIN FIRST, 13,639 (1.0%)
BRITISH NATIONAL PARTY, 10,216 (0.8%)
CONSERVATIVE PARTY, 231,330 (17.2%)
LABOUR PARTY, 348,219 (25.9%)
LIBERAL DEMOCRATS, 95,319 (7.1%)
NO2EU, 6,418 (0.5%)
SCOTTISH GREEN PARTY, 108,305 (8.0%)
SCOTTISH NATIONAL PARTY (SNP), 389,503 (28.9%)
UK INDEPENDENCE PARTY (UKIP), 140,534 (10.4%)

Rejected papers 2,184 (0.2%)
Total votes cast 1,345,667
Electorate 4,016,735

Turnout 33.5%

To see a breakdown of your own region have a look at :
Most are fairly predictable eg SNP and Conservative fighting it out in Aberdeenshire, and Labour winning Glasgow. The LibDems are still popular in rural areas and the SNP are popular in the heartlands of Perthshire and Stirling etc.

The turnout was disappointing at around 33% and even in Scotland, where we are all supposed to be enthused about the future of our country, the turnout was 33.5% (Ref :  http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/news/article/1560/scottish_results_of_european_elections_announced)
Edinburgh has reported a turnout of 41.6% -  The final official vote for Scotland will not be declared until Monday lunchtime, when the Western Isles vote is counted. It is not counted on a Sunday for religious reasons.

This guide from the BBC shows where in the UK people voted for particular parties :

and the Guardian had results from across Europe analysed as they came in at :http://www.theguardian.com/politics/blog/2014/may/25/eu-election-results-live

Sunday Herald

Well that was interesting yesterday when the Sunday Herald came out in support of Independence. And with a fantastically illustrated cover by Alasdair Gray, the artist and writer who lives in the West End of Glasgow and is famous for his artwork in Oran Mor.

I felt that this came at a good time to redress the balance after there was a poll which came out during the week in support of a No vote.
So it feels to me like its back to more of a 50/50 again.

And here is an opinion piece in the Telegraph !
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-27201675

I feel I am definitely back to my Don't Know stance, perhaps with a marginal Yes vote likely. Part of my apprehension now is fuelled by the Tories and the likelihood of a vote to come out of the EU by those in England, where enthusiasm among the media seems to be very anti-EU.

Interesting TV and Radio Programmes

I don't know what I would do without Radio 4 - my favourite programme ! I would keep it even if they took away my telly, which I hardly watch now !
Although I couldn't do without my internet either now !

Anyway here was a good programme this weekend - Landward - well worth watching - it has a piece about Red Deer Farming - if I was a farmer I'd definitely think about getting into this...Although they do look quite tricky to handle. And I am not a great one about killing animals for meat. Although I can see the argument that at least if we can make sure they are well cared for and have a reasonable standard of living.... The programme then goes on to look at a massive forestry operation on the A82. Very interesting !  And it finishes with the best bit - whisky tasting ! And some real connoisseurs appreciating some old malts and a visit to one of our favourites - Glenlivet Distillery.  I think the programme starts with a piece about the new John Muir way which has been laid out near the Campsies area north of Glasgow, but I missed the beginning:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0421ttj/Landward_2014_2015_Episode_5/

And then this morning there was a really interesting programme Start the Week which was talking about the Future of Capitalism on Radio 4.
Well worth listening to. Although the interviewer let one woman speak too long in my opinion and then butted in over two crucial and important points where I was really wanting to hear the end of the sentence !
Very interesting the idea that we are now away from the Gold Standard since 1971 so we now just have to trust that money is worth what is written on it. And when governments start printing money its when they are trying to have a war....mmm !

St George's Day

Today is St George's Day so cue a flurry of announcements from our politicians !

And to accompany our blog post here is the wonderful statue of Saint George and the dragon from St George's Cross in Glasgow. The statue was presented to the people of Glasgow by the Cooperative Wholesale Society in 1897 and stood on the old Co-op building at the cross until the building was demolished in 1985 at which time the sculpture was saved and it was given its new site in 1988.
So lets wait and see what Alex Salmond has to say today about links between the North of England and an Independent Scotland when he visits the Borders.  And playing for the other side today we have David Cameron making a plea as well ! More later !

And we still have to digest (and read in the first place), Gordon Brown's announcement yesterday about pensions and whether an Independent Scotland can afford the public sector ones.

And did you watch What Women Want last night on BBC2 with Jackie Bird ? It was quite interesting about whether women vote differently, do we take longer to ponder the opposing arguments or do we just want the answers and haven't yet been given them ?
And this morning Morning Call is discussing those same issues on Radio Scotland - did you hear me speaking to Kirsty Wark in the introduction to the programme ?

Brian Taylor's Big Debate

Just back from being in the audience at Brian Taylor's Big Debate, a BBC Radio Scotland Programme !

Some interesting questions and an interesting panel.  And pulling it all together with humour is Brian !  Take the chance to get in the audience if it is ever recording near you.

Issues which came up with regards to Independence included firstly the energy issue. An audience member explained that Scotland's oil is not mostly in foreign ownership, the companies are merely licensed to remove the oil and have to re-apply every seven years and pay a large license.  This sounds like he knows what he is talking about, but does anyone have some references or useful links about this ?  Also on the same point someone mentioned about how much Scottish land is actually in Scottish ownership. Fiona McLeod, SNP MSP said one inspiration that originally took to coming into politics was from the 7:84 theatre company who took their title from the fact that 84% of our land was in only 7% of people's hands.  But generally the fact that we have a variety of sources of energy was mentioned, and also the fact that no energy comes freely, the all need some sort of subsidy or investment, but also Patrick Harvie the Green MSP mentioned how we should also take climate change into account when making energy decisions.

Further issues raised included the Europe question and there was a general feeling in the room that we should be in Europe, whether that was in an Independent Scotland (which, as someone said, might be the safest bet if we want to be in the EU) or from the UK, which is currently a definite Member State of the EU. However it is by no means certain that England wouldn't vote to come out even though Scotland would stay in.  A UKIP audience member then was asked to comment. It was unclear really what his comment was but he was certain he was being censored, even though he was invited to continue his point three times ! And for a party with currently no representation in Scotland this seemed pretty fair !!

You can listen in to the debate here, where the other issues raised included parent's being best educators of young children / childcare and also the Red Road Flats / Commonwealth Games opening ceremony issue: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03zdxvs

One Politician Revisits 1984 While Another Proves he is as Slippery as a Salmon !!

Its been a funny old day for politics.

We are still picking over yesterday's budget from George Osborne.  And then yesterday evening we had the Bingo and Beer advert from the Conservatives. I spotted it on Twitter and assumed it was a spoof. I believe it was released by Grant Shapps, but I could be wrong.... The truly insulting thing about it is that they say "Giving hard working people more of what THEY enjoy !", thereby admitting that they are not "One of Us"
but also admitting they are not "Hard Working" !! They had also produced another whole series of infographic style ads illustrating to us plebs and illiterates what the budget could mean for us !

It makes you realise how close we have now come to realising the nightmare scenario that George Orwell warned about in his classic novel 1984 : "Heavy physical work, the care of home and children, petty quarrels with neighbors, films, football, beer, and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult…. All that was required of them was a primitive patriotism which could be appealed to whenever it was necessary to make them accept longer working hours or shorter rations. And when they become discontented, as they sometimes did, their discontentment led nowhere, because being without general ideas, they could only focus it on petty specific grievances."

The pension reform seems to be a good move. At least freeing up those with private pensions to have some more freedom over where their money can go rather than having to buy an Annuity. But no doubt the finance firms will already be re-manoeuvring to find other ways to take our money from us !

They have raised the personal tax allowance by £500, this does not help those paid less than that but it does still also help those on very high salaries as all tax payers will benefit from that.  And I also heard on the radio that it will not help those where their benefits will shift to off-set that. Again, if someone can explain this further, can you please email so I can modify this.

And for Scotland there seemed to be some breadcrumbs thrown in the form of some tax benefit for the whisky industry.

But overall, the budget seemed to be not great for the ordinary person and again more advantages for the very well off, with a further advantage for those who can save £15,000 a year !
And unfortunately, Labour appeared to be unable to make any sort of response worthy of a strong opposition.

So that was the Budget 2014 - the year of Beer and Bingo !

It does feel rather like Tony Benn warned about, where the people never get the politics they deserve and rather the two parties of the two party state just transfer power backwards and forwards between them.

And then to Scottish politics !
On the radio this evening I heard Ruth Davison, head of the Scottish Conservative party, asking Alex Salmond to explain why the oil revenue figures were so much less than predicted in the White Paper. He avoided giving a straight answer.
I do wonder if pressure hasn't been put on the oil companies to shift as much profit etc into other financial years etc so that this year's figures would appear worse than usual. But as yet I haven't had time to investigate further.  There is one reference here : http://www.ifs.org.uk/publications/7124  and more .... http://www.ifs.org.uk/publications/7131  A lot of reading there !!

Change or Status Quo - Comparing the Campaigns !

The Yes Campaign were out in force on our local town centre today, to catch all the Saturday shoppers and undecided voters ! At least they are keen.  Distinctive blue saltires flying !

But where are the Better Together campaigners ? No sign. I have seen photographs of their stalls being manned by a single person but I have as yet to see them out on the streets.

But what I am really surprised about is that the Better Together campaign don't seem to have harnessed the media or tried to create a brand.

Certainly its harder to market the "status quo" but I am pretty sure they should have been able to come up with something. Maybe the full campaign is yet to be revealed !!

Personally I can think of a fantastic campaign which would work for either side.

And I can think of a great idea for a reality TV show....which would actually work for either side although the reality TV show might work better for the Better Together side.... but I'm saying nothing !

I am schtaying schtum !  (any TV producers with a wad of cash can maybe extract this information from me ! hee hee ! ;-) )

Welcome to my Blog - Seeking Answers to the Main Questions in the Scottish Independence debate

The Scottish Independence Debate - to Vote YES or NO....
or help....I DON'T KNOW !!

I have started this blog to try to gather some information to answer various questions which have arisen as part of the Independence debate for Scotland.

I am probably undecided whether to vote Yes or a No - I have swayed into both camps over the last few months.

So, firstly I decided to gather some information. If you can help at all, please email me at mister-ed at hotmail.co.uk .  Either to answer any points or to suggest further questions.

I will have a separate page for each point.

Please follow the blog and join in the discussion !
